Calling all students, teachers and people weary of Windows hassles: Is it time to consider a Chromebook? Let's see if this deal can convince you: For a limited time, and while supplies last, Best Buy has the second-gen Lenovo 100E 11.6-inch Chromebook for $99 -- a price that includes three free months of Disney Plus. It normally runs $159, and it was $20 higher just last week. That's one of the cheapest options I've seen for a modern, nonrefurbished Chromebook.

The 100E offers a little more horsepower than you'd expect from a $99 laptop. Yes, the screen is on the smaller side, though its 1,366x768-pixel resolution is fine for that size -- and it has an antiglare coating, which is always welcome.

The system comes with 4GB of RAM, not just 2GB like in older budget Chromebooks. There's 32GB of onboard storage, expandable via microSD and a pair of ports: one USB-C, one USB 3.1. There's even a full-size HDMI port for connecting to an external monitor or TV.

GoPro makes vlogging with its camera a little easier with the Hero 10 Black Creator Edition. The setup packages the great little Hero 10 Black camera, released in September, and three accessories, including a brand new handgrip that's both a backup battery and remote control.

Again, at the center of the Creator Edition is the Hero 10 Black, GoPro's current top camera. Its features include video capture at up to 5.3K at 60 frames per second or 4K at 120fps for slow-motion and a ton of other shooting options for photos and time-lapses, and it has incredible image stabilization. And the camera, which has screens on the front and rear, is rugged, too, and waterproof down to 33 feet without a housing.

But the camera is just the camera and it's really the accessories that make the Creator Edition worth considering. In the package with the camera are two of GoPro's Mods, the Light Mod and Media Mod, and the new Volta mount.  

The Media Mod is a camera housing that adds a micro-HDMI output, a 3.5mm mic jack and a USB-C pass-through for charging. It also has a directional mic built in with a removable foam windscreen as well as two cold-shoe mounts. 

The included Light Mod slots into one of those shoes. It's a compact LED light with four levels of brightness, including an overdrive mode to get up to 200 lumens for 30 seconds of brighter light. There's also a strobe setting so you can use it as a safety light. It's bright enough to light your face at arm's length. It's also waterproof.

Both of these Mod add-ons have been available for some time, but the Creator Edition bundles them with the camera and the new Volta mount. The Volta combines a handgrip with a Bluetooth remote control and battery pack. A coiled USB-C cable plugs into the Media Mod and GoPro said it can power the camera and Mods for up to 4 hours recording in 4K at 30fps. I tested it and landed at 4 hours, 3 minutes, so this is spot-on. Without the Mods, it can run the camera at 5.3K at 30fps for 4 hours.

The Volta can also power the camera on and off, switch shooting modes and start and stop recordings, snap photos or start a timelapse. And since it's a wireless connection, you can use it with the camera mounted somewhere else. The cable on the Volta is just for power, so it needs the Bluetooth connection to control the camera, but it's easy to do and quick to connect. When the cable is not connected to the camera, there's no option to remove it or secure it to the Volta so it just sort of sticks out.

The Volta has built-in legs that flip down so you can use it as a tripod and the top mount swivels all the way around to put the camera in the best position for shooting. It also has a set of pop-out mounting fingers so you can quickly attach it to another mount like a suction cup or chest mount, letting you still take advantage of the extra battery life. It's too bad the Volta doesn't extend at all, but it does have a tripod mount in the bottom so putting it on a selfie stick is easy enough if a little more reach is needed. 

One thing worth noting is that although the individual parts are weather-resistant or waterproof, once the Volta is connected to the Media Mod, they're no longer weather-tight. Standing around in the snow or rain while you vlog isn't something you'll want to do with them.

Now, as you might expect, since the package includes the Hero 10 Black, this is not going to be cheap. The Hero 10 Black Creator Edition is $785, £760 and AU$1,205. For GoPro service subscribers, the bundle is $582, which actually isn't bad. The best deal is going to be for new subscribers, which brings the total price down to $532. Also, if you already have the Media and Light Mods or simply want the Volta alone, its price is $130.

Last month Verizon added new charges to its customers' phone bills, and it isn't done with increases. The carrier confirmed to CNET on Friday that it will raise rates for those on its older, shared data plans with their next bills. 

"Verizon's unlimited plans provide customers with the most value in the industry along with the peace of mind that their plan cost will not increase no matter how much talk, text or data they use," a Verizon spokesman said in a statement. "While we recommend our Shared Data Plan customers migrate to an unlimited plan to take advantage of all we have to offer, we are not requiring it.

"That said, for the limited number of consumer customers remaining on these accounts, we will be introducing a rate plan adjustment in their next bill to account for the added cost of maintaining these legacy plans."

Verizon has confirmed to CNET that the "adjustment" will be $6 extra per month for single lines. Those with multiple lines on an account will be charged $12 more per month, for the entire account and not per individual line. 

The carrier will be messaging affected customers about the increases starting next week, with the extra cost coming into effect on their next month's bill.

The move comes as Verizon continues to look for ways to migrate users off of shared data plans and onto unlimited plans. While the carrier is not forcing users off of shared data plans, access to its faster 5G networks and its most aggressive device trade-in promotions have required being on one of its pricier unlimited options. This new increase is the latest, and most aggressive, nudge to get people to give up older plans.

Rival AT&T announced a similar price hike for nonunlimited plans in early May, citing higher business costs as a justification. Like Verizon, the carrier raised single lines on shared data plans by $6 per month, while family plans went up by $12 per month. 

News that Apple is finally done with the iPod Touch after its seventh generation lingered on shelves for years has many Apple fans seriously considering picking one up this week. And while some folks have found themselves debating a trip to the store to pick up one of the last iPods at the Apple Store, I am reminded of just how much I like the iPod I wear on my wrist every day and how much nicer it is for my needs than a big iPod Touch. For a long time now, my iPod has been my Apple Watch, and I think it's something more people should try out for themselves. 

It's been a long time since the iPod existed exclusively for people to load up with music and have their entire library with them at all times. The sheer volume of people who rely almost entirely on streaming music services for their entire library these days has eliminated the need for local storage beyond what you can get with the base model iPod Touch, which is 32GB. That storage size is enough for you to grab multiple days of music in offline mode through those streaming apps, but also tons of podcasts and audiobooks from to keep your ears busy when you're not connected to Wi-Fi. But did you know you could do all of this fairly easily on an Apple Watch, many of which also have 32GB of onboard storage? You can, and it's surprisingly easy.  

Apple's wrist computer has been hailed as a decent standalone music player for a little while now, especially if you use AirPods and you can quickly switch audio from your phone to your watch with a button press. But the ability to listen from your wrist isn't really the most interesting part of the Apple Watch experience. All of the apps on my phone that support Apple Watch playback are already installed, so no need to worry about separate configuration. I can navigate my Watch either using the screen or the scroll wheel, and in most cases I can even use Siri to play something on my watch with even greater ease. There's no need to worry about anything in my pocket, and it's extremely unlikely that I'll accidentally set my Watch down somewhere and forget it. 

The biggest difference between using an iPod and Apple Watch is the way apps behave. Not every app on my watch behaves the same way, and in fact many don't behave the same way as the default Apple apps. Audible, for example, asks me to go into the app on my phone and go through multiple steps to move a book to my watch. It's very different from the Apple Books experience, and that change in steps can be confusing to learn from app to app. And, of course, you're not going to be doing a lot of gaming on your Apple Watch, which is a lot more possible on the iPod Touch but nowhere near as nice as what you get on your iPhone these days. 

Even the cost of the Apple Watch can be fairly close to that of an iPod Touch. Currently, the Apple Watch SE is available starting at $229 and when you consider what you get in that package compared to the $190 iPod Touch it's a pretty great deal. You can of course spend a little more for a slightly nicer Watch, or get some increased storage model iPod Touch, but ultimately the differences in price aren't as far apart as they used to be. (The Watch even has a leg up on the Touch, in that you can opt for a cellular version with always-on connectivity.) But in 2022, digital music devotees need to "think different" once again: Start using your Apple Watch like an iPod, and you'll find it's a lot more convenient and fun to use than you might imagine. 

If you use WhatsApp and want to move from an Android phone to an iPhone, the fact that you can't move your WhatsApp message archive to iOS becomes a huge stumbling block. It might not seem like a critical issue, but there are over 2 billion people who use WhatsApp globally as their main contact with friends and family. Switching to an iPhone typically means they have to abandon years worth of photos and conversations in their WhatsApp message. My colleague Claire Reilly even took to carrying around two phones to solve the problem: her new iPhone and an old Android phone that had her WhatsApp history and media. 

Fortunately there's now a remedy: Move to iOS, an Android app Apple created. The app already helps people move their contacts, calendar, SMS messages and photos from an Android phone to an iPhone. As of Tuesday, you can now move your WhatsApp data from Android to iOS, too.

The majority of WhatsApp users are on Android. And it will be interesting to see if this convinces more people who use WhatsApp to switch to an iPhone.

Move to iOS encrypts WhatsApp data, which has to be authenticated on your iPhone before you can pick up where you left off. A beta version of WhatsApp for Android currently offers support for the process.

As far as requirements are concerned, here's what you need:

• iPhone running iOS 15.5 
• Android phone running Lollipop (Android 5)
• The most recent version of Move to iOS from the Google Play Store
• The most recent version of WhatsApp for Android

Once your WhatsApp data is on your new iPhone, you can back it up using iCloud.

This news falls a week after Apple announced new iOS 16 additions to its Messages app that include being able to unsend or edit sent messages.

The latest ninth-gen iPad is a solid iPad options out there if you're looking for a portable tablet that can help you be productive on the go (or from your comfortable couch). Whether you want to work, play, stay connected, create, explore or stream entertainment online, it will be easy to do with the iPad's upgraded CPU and Neural Engine, which offer a faster and more powerful performance compared to previous models. 

Right now you can save $50 on 2021 iPad (64GB) with Wi-Fi on Amazon, bringing the price to just $280. Note you only save that much on the space gray model, not the silver one.

Apple's 10.2-inch tablet comes with an A13 Bionic chip, an 8-megapixel wide-angle rear camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide front camera with Center Stage technology and more. The Retina display has been upgraded from previous models and now has True Tone technology, which adjusts the screen for comfortable viewing in any light. 

It also features a Lightning connector and gets up to 10 hours of battery life per charge. Plus, the 2021 iPad supports the first-gen Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, which are sold separately, but can help you create and work with ease and may be worth the investment. 

And if you are worried that 64GB of storage may not be enough for your pictures, videos or other projects or media, remember that Apple offers plenty of ways to increase your storage if you are willing to use cloud services like the company's own iCloud option or apps like Dropbox and Google Drive, so that storage size shouldn't limit what you can do on your iPad. And springing for the smaller size will save you a lot of money down when compared to the larger 256GB model, which starts at $479 at the Apple Store.

CNET's Scott Stein wrapped up his review of this iPad by saying, "I think the basic unexciting iPad wins out. Especially for the price." He awarded it an Editors' Choice.

Instagram is testing a full-screen immersive feed and updated navigation that seems to borrow a page from TikTok's playbook. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of parent company Meta, posted Thursday on his Instagram story that people can expect to see the test soon. 

"Photos are still an important part of Instagram, and we're working on ways to improve the way they show up in a full-screen Feed too," Zuckerberg said. 

Prior to this test, Instagram users would have to click into a video to access the full-screen version of it. The full-screen feed is similar to the feed of rival social app TikTok, which emphasizes video content over photos. 

The update to Instagram's feed comes as TikTok continues to rise in popularity among younger generations, according to a forecast from eMarketer. Last year, TikTok said it had more than 1 billion monthly active users. In April, Meta reported that its family of apps -- which includes Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp -- had 2.87 billion daily users. 

Instagram has rolled out a slew of updates and new features already this year, including letting anyone on the app tag products in posts and Amber Alerts that let people see and share notices about missing children. In April, Instagram also reworked how it ranks content in order to elevate original posts. 

When Apple launched its latest line of MacBook Pros with the new M1 Max chips, I was excited, as a professional photographer, by the upgrades and what that could mean for working creatives. The 16-inch model with an M1 Max CPU impressed CNET's Dan Ackerman so much it earned a coveted Editors' Choice award.

So when I got one in my hands, I wanted to see how well it copes with a demanding professional photoshoot workload. 

I put the top-end 16-inch Pro with the M1 Max chip with 64GB of RAM to the test in a studio photoshoot with probably the world's best -- and most demanding -- camera. It's the Phase One XFIQ4, a commercial-standard medium format camera that churns out whopping 150-megapixel images and costs somewhere north of $60,000. This beast is in the hands of elite professional commercial photographers the world over, and its stunning, detailed images would be a great test for the M1 Max chip.

I put together an ambitious product photoshoot of a "technology stir fry" showing a variety of tech products being tossed in oil in a wok above roaring flames. It involved shooting all the different elements individually, then piecing together numerous images from the camera into the single, finished shot seen above. This kind of compositing work can be demanding on a system, especially when working with multiple high-resolution layers. 

The finished image was made of 28 full-resolution images, loaded into a single document in Photoshop, each one with its own masking, adjustments and other effects. In short, it's a behemoth of a Photoshop document, clocking in at almost 11GB in size. 

Anecdotally, working on the MacBook Pro felt swift. The camera was tethered over USB-C and the images were taken, imported and initially adjusted in Phase One's own Capture One Pro software, which has been optimized for Apple's M1 chips. It was zippy, with no noticeable lag when making adjustments to the images or when flicking between the shots I'd taken, despite their size. This alone was a relief, as some of my product photoshoots can involve taking hundreds upon hundreds of images and any slowdown from the machine can be frustrating.

I initially exported 45 full-resolution images (in Phase One's .IIQ format), which I loaded into an image stack in Photoshop. On the M1 Max MacBook it took 2 minutes, 44 seconds to load the images into the document. I did the same thing using the older 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro (a 2020 model with 16GB of RAM) and it struggled, crashing multiple times before eventually taking almost exactly 5 minutes to load the stack.

I then tried the same import test with a 2019 16-inch, Intel Core i9 MacBook Pro with 64GB of RAM, which took 4 minutes, 43 seconds. It should be noted that this MacBook is my work-provided one, and as such has a variety of security applications running in the background that could affect its performance.

Once loaded, I selected the layers and used the Auto-Align tool to ensure all the images lined up with each other. It's a demanding process but one that I use regularly for product photography, so efficient performance here is essential for my workflow. The M1 Max model took 6 minutes, 24 seconds to align the layers, the 16-inch Intel model took 7 minutes, 15 seconds while the 13-inch M1 model took a whopping 18 minutes, 20 seconds to complete the same task.  

The M1 Max MacBook handled the rest of the edit without any issue, allowing me to zoom in and out without lag or showing any real signs of slowing down. I ended up deleting some layers to get down to the 28 that made up the final image, yet even with every layer having its own masks and effects, the machine coped admirably with the edit process. 

My next test involved a focus stack of an image of an iPhone I shot with the Phase One camera. Focus stacking involves taking separate images of an object at different focus points before merging those shots to achieve pin-sharp focus from front to back. As with layer aligning, it's a demanding task for the processor. You can see the full breakdown below of times it took each MacBook to load the 12 individual 303MB DNG (Adobe Digital Negative raw) files into an image stack, align the images and then focus stack in Photoshop, but the M1 Max was way ahead of the others on every single test, with the focus stacking tool in particular seeming to benefit from the M1 optimizations in Photoshop.

Arguably that should come as no surprise, given that it's the latest model and it's running Apple's top-performing processor with the highest amount of RAM you can get it with. But pro photographers are a demanding bunch and time is money in a busy studio, so it's good to know the extra investment for the M1 Max will indeed result in faster and more efficient work.

Google and Amazon may be the big names when it comes to smart home innovations, but they're not the only ones pushing the boundaries. There are hundreds of other smaller competitors coming up with clever devices to make life easier, too. True, you probably won't see the next big breakthrough in robotics or voice assistance coming from a 10-person team. But smaller teams continue to explore new possibilities when it comes to increased energy efficiency, security and privacy. 

These are seven of the most interesting but difficult-to-categorize smart home accessories on the market right now. Drew McIntyre is your new WWE Champion. In the main event of the strangest WrestleMania of all time, McIntyre pinned Brock Lesnar, clean in the middle, to become world champ. 

But that's not what this show will be remembered for. Instead, it'll be remembered for the preposterously delightful Firefly Funhouse "match" between John Cena and Bray Wyatt. It was like day one of WrestleMania, where the Boneyard match completely overshadowed Braun Strowman's Universal Championship win -- but the Firefly Funhouse was even better. 

Elsewhere on the show, Charlotte Flair won the NXT Championship and Bayley retained her SmackDown Women's Championship. Between those two matches and Saturday's Tag Team and Raw Championship matches, the women had a clean sweep of strong performances this weekend. 

The lowlight of the show was, surprisingly, Edge versus Randy Orton. I know, it hurts me to say it too.

Drew McIntyre defeats Brock Lesnar

We got ourselves a new WWE Champion. After four Claymore Kicks, Drew McIntyre pinned Brock Lesnar to win the title. 

This was a simple match. McIntyre hit a Claymore Kick on Lesnar. Lesnar kicked out. Lesnar got a few suplexes in and three F5s. McIntyre kicked out. McIntyre hits three more Claymores for the win.

Rating: 2 stars. Nothing but big moves. It may have worked with a crowd, but it didn't here -- especially since we saw basically the same match on Saturday between Goldberg and Braun Strowman. (It was better than that match, though.) 

Bray Wyatt "wins" Firefly Funhouse match

OK. Bray Wyatt versus John Cena in a Firefly Funhouse match. Heaven or hell, right? 99% chance of awful, 1% chance of being unforgettably great.

This was unforgettably great.

I implore you to go out of your way to watch this, because talking about it does it no justice. Like Saturday's Boneyard match, it was essentially a short film. Imagine Bray Wyatt as a videogame boss, taking John Cena through different moments in his career and making him relive them.

There was John Cena's debut. John Cena as a rapper. John Cena's match against Wyatt at WrestleMania 30. And, for some reason, John Cena as Hulk Hogan and Bray Wyatt as Eric Bischoff during an episode of WCW Nitro. After all this insanity, Wyatt turned into The Fiend and laid out Cena with a Mandible Claw.

It makes no sense. I cannot explain to you why this was good. It was just ridiculous and absurd but in the best way. Watch it. 

Bayley retains SmackDown Women's Championship

Bayley successfully defends her SmackDown Women's Championship against Sasha Banks, Lacey Evans, Tamina and Naomi in a five-way elimination match. 

After a slow start, this five-way ended up as a very good match. Tamina was out first as all four women hit top-rope moves on her, one after the other, and then stacked themselves on top to pin her. From there, it was Bayley and Banks teaming together against Evans and Naomi. 

After Evans was thrown outside, Naomi took on both Bayley and Banks alone. This was a lot of fun, as Naomi put up some creative offense. But eventually she was overcome by the two, and tapped out to a Banks Statement. It looked like Evans would suffer the same fate, but Bayley accidentally hit Banks with a knee causing some discord. Among it all, Evans scored a Women's Right punch to Banks and eliminated her.

Evans has improved an impressive amount over the past 9 months. She did great here, having a strong back-and-forth with Bayley. As she looked to win, Banks returned to the ring and hit a Backstabber, allowing Bayley to get the win.

Rating: 3.5 stars. Charlotte versus Rhea Ripley was a better wrestled match, but in the empty-arena environment this may have been the best match of the night so far. Bayley's best match as SmackDown Women's Champion, too. 

Street Profits retain Raw Tag Team Championships

The Street Profits retain their Raw Tag Team Championships in what would have been a solid Raw match. Angelo Dawkins pinned Austin Theory after Montez Ford hit a huge Frog splash on Theory. After the match, Theory, Angel Garza and Zelina Vega beat down The Street Profits. They're saved by Bianca Belair, who I suppose makes her Raw debut by attacking Vega. 

The match wasn't particularly memorable, but it was high-energy -- exactly what was needed after Edge versus Orton.

Rating: 2 stars. 

Rob Gronkowski wins 24/7 Title

Umm. Yeah. Why not?

Edge beat Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing match

Edge is a legend. Randy Orton is great. No disrespect to either guy. But this was an offensively boring match. It went on forever. And ever. And ever. And so on.

It had a cool open. Edge was waiting in the ring as Orton's music played. Orton appears out of nowehere and RKOs edge -- he had been dressed as a cameraman and snuck in behind Edge. What followed was over 30 minutes of generic brawling throughout the Performance Center. Below is a gif of the only noteworthy moment: 

They brawled in the gym. They brawled in the warehouse. They brawled in a board room. In the end, they brawled on top of a production truck. Atop that truck, they hit their finishes and Edge ultimately won with a Conchairto chair shot.

Rating: 0 stars. So long. Nothing happening. Announcers sounded bored. I was bored too. 

Otis defeats Dolph Ziggler

I mentioned before that Charlotte and Rhea Ripley would have been particularly helped by a live crowd. This match was that times 10. Otis' schtick is so over the top, it relies on crowd affirmation to make it work. Watching him do his Hulk-up air humping, for instance, really doesn't work without the crowd reacting to it. Plus, so much of this match is about Otis finally getting his hands on Ziggler -- another element that the crowd needs to affirm for it to work properly. 

For his part, Ziggler did great. His offense was crisp and, as usual, selling was on point.

After a distraction from Sonia Deville, who escorted Ziggler to the ring, Ziggler hit Otis with a kick to the groin. Later, Mandy Rose came out to the ring and, with the ref distracted, gave Ziggler a low blow. Otis nails his Caterpillar elbow drop for the win.

Otis and Rose celebrated in the ring after, with Otis getting a kiss. It was kind of gross. Happy WrestleMania!

Aleister Black pins Bobby Lashley

After a decent match, Aleister Black defeated Bobby Lashley with a wicked Black Mass. Lashley, in control, had Black on his shoulders for a Dominator slam, but Lana encouraged Lashley to put Black down and hit Black with a spear instead. He acquiesces -- but gets caught mid-spear with a Black Mass.

The problem with this bout was that Black was the obvious winner. That made Lashley's offense, which took up the majority of the match, feel flat. Even in an empty arena, though, it's fun watching Black flip around and hit his gnarly strikes.

Charlotte wins the NXT Championship

The main show kicks off with Charlotte Flair winning the NXT Women's Championship, submitting Rhea Ripley with a Figure Eight. 

All matches at these shows would be better with a crowd, obviously, but this one would have particularly benefited. The two flowed so well together, with the bout going back and forth throughout, you get the sense this would have been an extremely hot opener for WrestleMania day two. 

It began with Ripley starting on top, hitting a Riptide slam very early. It was but a two count, and before long Charlotte gained control and worked over Ripley's leg. Charlotte is fantastic at looking like she's trying to win a fight, as opposed to performing a wrestling match. That helps a lot in a situation like this. 

The two had strong chemistry, though Ripley, just 23 years young, looks a little sloppy at points. (Still impressive to be so good so quick, though.) There was no uber creative spot that you'd never seen before, but it was a fun match throughout.

Chromebooks are a tempting option for the budget-conscious, especially if you're looking for a new computer that you can easily take on the go. The main thing to keep in mind when comparing a laptop to a Chromebook is that it's not an apples-to-apples comparison. The main difference, besides price, is the operating system. If you're used to using Windows or MacOS, Google's minimalist Chrome operating system may not have all the functionality you need. But then again, maybe it does, and with some Chromebooks even dipping below $300, maybe you stand to save a bundle of cash by nixing the features you don't use anyway.

When Chromebooks first arrived in 2011 they were routinely derided -- and rightfully so -- for their limited functionality and reliance on a consistent internet connection. The operating system turned 10 years old last year and today's Chromebooks, which come in both laptop and two-in-one designs, are far from where they started, but some things haven't changed, and you might not be willing to work with the limitations they do have. (Also, if you don't feel like reading this and would just rather experience Chrome OS, here's how to temporarily run it on any laptop using an inexpensive USB flash drive you probably already have lying around.)

What can and can't I do with a Chromebook?

When Chrome OS launched it was essentially Google's Chrome web browser. For those used to an operating system like Windows and Mac, it made the average Chromebook seem like little more than a laptop that runs a web browser and that's all. 

Even if the Chrome OS never matured beyond that, the fact is quite a lot can be done entirely on the web these days. Take stock of everything you do on a daily basis and you may find there's nothing you can't accomplish with Chrome at its most basic level. 

That said, a Windows laptop or MacBook can run the Chrome browser as well as other software supported by those operating systems. Even if you don't immediately need a particular piece of software, it's nice to have the option. Plus, if you're shopping for a Chromebook for remote learning with Google Classroom, a Mac or Windows PC will work as well.

Along those lines, Chromebooks are not natively compatible with Windows or Mac software. Businesses can use VMware on Chromebooks to run Windows applications but that's not an easy option for most Chromebook owners. However, there is support for Linux software, plus current models can run Android apps and there are also web apps that are available through Google's Chrome Web Store. Also, if you're considering a Chromebook as a secondary device, it's possible to use Windows or Mac software on a Chromebook by using Chrome's Remote Desktop feature and it actually works really well!

One of the big hurdles here for many people is access to Microsoft Office. You can't install the full Windows or MacOS desktop versions of Office software on a Chromebook, but you can use Office 365 online and install the Office progressive web apps. PWAs act just like mobile apps, so you can use them offline, get notifications and pin them to the taskbar. But generally speaking, if you need or want a specific Windows or Mac application -- and there's no suitable web or Android app substitute and VMware isn't an option -- don't get a Chromebook. 

Also, if you need advanced photo- and video-editing capabilities, you'll want a Windows, Mac or Linux laptop. Basic photo and video editing is fine, but Chromebooks typically don't offer the graphics performance you need for demanding tasks or, again, the option to install Windows or Mac software and games. On the other hand, with streaming-game services like Google Stadia, Nvidia GeForce Now, Amazon Luna and Xbox Cloud Gaming, Chromebooks can now be used for more than Android and browser-based games. You can also install and play Linux games, though you'll need a higher-end Chromebook to do it. Plus, there are also several Android apps available for photo and video editing, including Adobe options.

What is a good Chromebook?

Several years ago, all Chromebooks were pretty much the same regardless of what company made them. Now, there's a far greater variety of laptops and two-in-ones -- convertibles and tablets -- to take advantage of Chrome OS's current capabilities. You'll still find more sizes and styles when it comes to Windows laptops, especially if you need top processing and graphics performance, but the variety of options is much better than in the past. 

If you're just after a good, basic experience with a Chromebook, the small, lightweight OS has minimal hardware requirements and the same goes for web apps. Having a faster, higher-end processor, more memory and greater storage for files and apps will help keep demanding multitaskers moving along; an Intel Core i-series or AMD Ryzen processor, 8GB of memory and a 128GB SSD for storage will take you far but certainly drives up the cost. Here's what I recommend when I'm asked what basic Chromebook specs to look for:

• Intel Celeron or Pentium, Qualcomm or MediaTek processors
• 4GB of memory
• 64GB of storage
• Full HD (1,920x1,080-pixel) display

There is flexibility with these recommendations. You can get a 1,366x768-resolution display, for example, but the cheap ones used in low-end Chromebooks look particularly soft next to full-HD models. And you can get by with 32GB of onboard storage as long as there's a microSD card slot to supplement it or you don't plan to download a lot of Android apps. Unlike a regular laptop, a Chromebook relies more on cloud storage for files rather than local storage. It's also worth noting that many times storage and memory are soldered on and can't be upgraded after the fact so you might want to plan ahead. 

Regardless of what Chromebook you buy, before you buy it you should find out the device's Auto Update Expiration date, or AUE. Currently, non-Google hardware is only supported for so long before it stops receiving Chrome OS and browser updates, including those for security. For models released now, the date is roughly seven to eight years from the initial release of the device, but that's not always the case. Google maintains a list of AUE dates for all models and you should check it before you buy a Chromebook, new or used. 

Do Chromebooks need an internet connection?

When Chromebooks first launched they basically became paperweights when they were offline -- a real issue if you were in the middle of editing an important document you suddenly couldn't save because your web connection dropped. Things have thankfully gotten better as Google improved offline capabilities and common apps like Netflix, YouTube and Spotify have offline options as well.

For a regular laptop, being offline is a little less of a problem since you're using installed software that saves to internal storage. While neither experience is great offline these days, Chromebooks are not a great choice if you're not willing and able to be online most of the time. On the upside, Google has made it very easy for Android users to turn their phones into instant mobile hotspots and to have Chromebooks and Android devices work better together. 

Are Chromebooks cheap?

Because of the low hardware requirements of Chrome OS, not only can Chromebooks be lighter and smaller than the average laptop, they're generally less expensive, too.

New Windows laptops for $200 are few and far between and, frankly, are rarely worth buying. Finding a good $200 Chromebook, on the other hand, is pretty easy to do. And while spending more will get you better build quality, more features or faster performance, even these premium Chromebooks typically start between $400 and $500, but can easily run more than $1,000 depending on your needs. 

With Windows laptops, you typically need to spend $700 or more to get a thin, lightweight model with decent performance and battery life that will hold its performance for years to come.
